In contrast to other Nano breweries with valves and electronics of inferior quality, and designs that are simply home brew systems scaled to larger batch sizes – the Hopmaster is created for the professional brewer. The result is a kick-ass brew day, everyday.

Hopmaster Steam Specs

Portland Kettle Works Hopmaster Steam System

HOPMASTER FEATURE DEFINITIONS
Calandria
In the strictest sense of the meaning a calandria is a heating element used for evaporation. In brewery systems designed by Portland Kettle Works, the calandria is a heating element through which wort or water pass to be heated. Calandrias are only found on steam brewhouses.

External Calandria is standard equipment on all of our mash tuns. It allows the brewer to very precisely control the temperature of the mash bed by pumping wort through the External Calandria and heating it anywhere from zero to 20 (or more) degrees F. in a single pass. This craft system is unique and proprietary to Portland Kettle Works.

Internal Calandrias are found on all of our Boil Kettles and Hot Liquor Tanks. They add a powerful heating element to the brewers tool chest, and can be controlled very precisely by adjusting the amount of steam feeding into them.

Variable Frequency Drive

Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) units are an electronic speed control devices for motors. You can think of a VFD as a dimmer switch for any motor in your brewing system.

Portland Kettle Works employs VFD’s on every motor in your brewing system. Brewhouse pumps, Pumps on a Cart, Hot Liquor and Cold Liquor feed pumps, and Mixers, Rakes and Plough components are all equipped with Variable Feed Drives which allow their speed to be controlled very precisely. The VFD controls motor speed by limiting the Hz cycle to 3-phase motors, the lower the Hz the slower the motor runs.

A quality Variable Frequency Drive should allow for full torque at lower speeds, so power is not diminished, only the speed of the motor is reduced. The VFD’s used by Portland Kettle Works are compatible with single phase, 220 V, 3-phase 208-230 Volt and 3-phase 460 Volt electrical systems. We only need to know how you want it supplied.

Wedge Wire / V-Wire

Wedge Wire or V-Wire false bottoms represent the state-of-the-art in mash filtration technology for brew houses. Portland Kettle Works uses only true V-Wire false bottoms in all of our mash tuns. The principal behind the V-Wire is that there is a large surface area contacting the mash bed, while under the contact surface the filter is a triangle in cross section. The surface area away from the contact layer falls away very quickly, minimizing the risk of clogging the filtration screen, while allowing free flow of wort through the screen. Less efficient alternates to V-Wire are laser cut, drilled or punched plates of steel that reduce efficiency and do not employ the well-known advantages of V-Wire in your mash tun.

Conical Bottoms & Ultimate Drains

Conical Bottoms and Ultimate Drains are designs on all Portland Kettle Works brewery tanks. We have engineered a slight conical bottom on Mash Tuns, Boil Kettles, Hot Liquor Tanks and Cold Liquor Tanks, and Grants. Every one of these components is equipped with a center ultimate drain sized to accommodate rapid flush out and cleaning of the tanks. Little differences in design like a conical bottom with ultimate drain define the difference between a great brew day and a struggle every day.

Certified Food Grade 304L Stainless Steel

Certified Food Grade 304L Stainless Steel, also known as A2 or 18/8 Stainless Steel is the Food Grade Sanitary Stainless component used in all Portland Kettle Works brewery tanks.

The steel is composed of 17.5 to 20% chromium and 8 to 11% nickel along with other compounds. Interestingly the steel is comprised of not more than .08% Carbon. The material is generally non-magnetic, unless it has been highly machined. Its ease of use in forming operations and long-term stability make it the steel of preference for brewery equipment.

Clean In Place

Clean In Place (CIP) refers to the ability to clean tanks semi-automatically without the need for hand cleaning. Portland Kettle Works has engineered CIP into all of its brewery tanks so that the tanks and kettles of our systems essentially become something like a stand-alone dishwasher. The tools necessary for this operation to be carried out include hot water, a pump, an internal spray ball and cleaning chemicals.

Clean In Place systems save the brewer a huge amount of time and labor. Properly engineered CIP systems will efficiently and quickly sanitize your brewing system.
